The Complete Guide to Dermal Fillers
What fillers are, which areas they suit, how long they last and how to look after your skin afterwards.
What is a dermal filler?
Most fillers are made of hyaluronic acid, a substance naturally found in the skin that holds water. Fillers replace lost volume and give shape to facial contours.
Common areas
- Lips
- Cheeks and mid-face
- Tear troughs
- Chin and jawline
- Smile and marionette lines
- Nose (non-surgical reshaping)
How long does it last?
Usually 6–18 months depending on the area and product. Mobile areas such as the lips are absorbed sooner.
Before and after
- If possible and with your GP’s approval, pause blood-thinning medication a few days before.
- Avoid intense exercise, saunas and massaging the area for 24 hours.
- Mild swelling and bruising are normal and settle within days.
Safety
Hyaluronic-acid fillers are reversible. Treatment should only be done by a doctor who knows facial anatomy, using genuine products.
